Ah mass builders, the hardgainer’s best friend! If you are a typically skinny guy, or an average built guy, who is trying to pack on muscle mass, then a mass builder should be the number 1 supplement in your arsenal. Adding muscle mass requires you not only to consume an excess of calories to fuel growth but also to consume the right amount of macronutrients to create an anabolic environment. Mass building supplements are targeted at individuals who are trying to “bulk” and who are battling to consume such a large amount of daily calories through whole food. For this reason they are very calorie dense. Some mass builders even contain upward of 1000 calories per serving. This is equivalent to 2 very large meals.

In this article we are going to be taking a look at Nutritech’s Anabolic Mass Builder.

Protein is probably the most important component of a  muscle building diet  as it provides the body with the amino acids, or building blocks, required to repair, rebuild and maintain tissue. If your daily protein requirements are high, which they should be if you are trying to gain muscle mass, it can be difficult to consume enough protein through whole food which is why mass builder’s should contain a large dose of protein per serving. A decent mass builder should have roughly 40g of protein or more per serving. Nutritech’s Anabolic Mass Builder contains 45g of protein per serving making it above the average amount.

Carbohydrates provide the body with the energy it requires to complete intense training sessions as well as to promote the release of the anabolic hormone insulin which in turn helps to drive other nutrients (like protein, creatine and glutamine etc) directly to muscle cells.The carbs in Nutritech’s Anabolic Mass Builder include dextrose and waxy maize which are considered to be some of the top supplemental carbs.

L-Arginine is usually an ingredient which is found in most pre-workout supplements as it has the ability to increase nitric oxide levels and blood flow. This is very important during workouts as it enhances muscle pump and the increased blood flow brings with it river of nutrients.

Creatine is probably the most studied supplement ingredient on the market and while creatine monohydrate may be an “oldie”, it is definitely a “goodie”. Creatine monohydrate has the ability to increase strength and muscle size through the replenishment of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) in the muscles which enhances their ability to contract and provides it with energy. While there are newer versions of creatine on the market which are more easily absorbed (ie. creatine HCl & creatine nitrate), creatine monohydrate has stood the test of time and many clinical studies; both of which confirm its potency.

Glutamine is an amino acid which assists in boosting the immune system as these cells prefer glutamine as an energy source over glucose. While it is not proven to build muscle per se, it is an effective treatment for muscle wastage in people who have disease (for example AIDS) or who have undergone physical trauma.

BCAAs have been shown to prevent muscle catabolism and to provide energy to the working muscle. BCAA’s consist of the amino acids leucine, iso-leucine and valine and of these three, leucine is shown to be the most effective in the muscle-building process. That being said, all three amino acids are extremely important for the chemical reactions which need to occur in the repair and rebuilding process. For this reason it is important to consume these in a ratio of 2:1:1 (leucine, iso-leucine and valine respectively).

MUSCLE GAIN = 8.5/10

The product was given a thorough testing by a member of our staff who is typically a hardgainer. We all those know those guys that can eat and eat and never get fat. Well, the problem is that they also battle to add muscle mass. For this reason, he was the ideal person to try this product. Using the product along with a high-calorie diet and a 3-day hard-core training program, he managed to gain roughly 4kgs with only an increase in body fat of just over 1%. This means that although he did gain fat weight, it was miniscule in comparison to his muscle gain. For that we give the supplement a very respectable 8.5 out of 10 for muscle gain.

TASTE = 8/10

We went around the office to get a feel for what everyone thought of the taste and most people gave it two thumbs up. We tried the entire range of 4 flavours and all got at least 7 out of 10, leaving the total average at 8. Not bad considering such a variety of taste buds.

Mixability of mass builders is always a mission because of the sheer amount of product which needs to fit into your shaker. My suggestion would be to use a blender or if you can get a bigger shaker that also works like a bomb. In a normal shaker there were some clumps that stuck to the bottom sides but in a bigger one it shook up quickly and easily.

PRICING = 8/10

When compared to its competition on a serving to serving price, it was slightly cheaper an averaged at R11.68 per serving.

When it comes to the other benefits of the product, it has added vitamins and minerals to help support the body but the main ones which may impact growth potential include glutamine, creatine and arginine. The problem is that they are very minimal doses per serving so you will still need to take additional servings, especially of creatine.

OVERALL = 8.9/10

Overall the product is solid and worth the investment. My only concern would be for those who are eating 3800+ calories per day as this mass builder only contains 447 calories per 120g serving. This means that you would most likely need at least 3-4 servings per day over and above your food (unless you can eat like a horse). At 3-4 servings per day, the product would only last you 10-14 days meaning you would need to buy 2 per month plus an additional creatine supplement. However, for the average guy, you will get away with 1 mass builder per month.
