Choosing a pre-workout can be confusing. All of them promising mind blowing pumps, insane energy and focus, with a 100 ingredients we can’t spell or pronounce. Personally, I look for a few ingredients and I make sure they are in the effective doses they have been studied in. This is one of the main reasons I choose Chronicle SwitchOn as my go to pre-workout. My experience with it is a nice smooth energy, I don’t get jittery and I don’t seem to suffer the crash that some others give me (this may be due to the added 1000mg L -Tyrosine per serving). Caffeine

let’s not joke. This is one of the main reason we use pre-workouts, at a whopping 300mg you may want to assess tolerance first and use half a serving for a few workouts.

Beta Alanine

Beta-alanine has been shown to enhance muscular endurance. “Many people report being able to perform one or two additional reps in the gym when training in sets of 8–15 repetitions. Beta-alanine supplementation can also improve moderate- to high-intensity cardiovascular exercise performance, like rowing or sprinting,” according to Examine.com

The effective dose is 2-5g a day, and Chronicle SwitchOn has 3000m. My workouts are usually 90min long and I find this really does help me around the 60min mark when I usually hit a wall with endurance and I start to get flat.

Creatine 

The one ingredient we know works, and is probably the most researched. It increases strength and can also benefit the brain, muscles, bones, and liver. Chronicle SwitchOn contains 3g per serving. Effective dose range is usually 2,5g to 5g per day.

Leucine, Valine and Iso-leucine

It appears that maximizing skeletal muscle protein synthesis requires 3.2g of leucine as the “switch” or stimulatory effect. Chronicle SwitchOn contains 3.5g per serving. Supplementing BCAAs prevents a serum decline in BCAAs, which occurs during exercise. A serum decline would normally cause a tryptophan influx into the brain, followed by serotonin production, which causes fatigue. Now, the effectiveness of BCAA supplementation is under the spotlight at the moment, on whether it does hold benefit. For those not consuming enough daily protein it certainly does, for those of us consuming sufficient daily protein the positive effects are unfortunately not as significant.

These are just some of the key ingredients I look for, and I suggest you do too. Also, make sure you get an effective dose as indicated above, as under dosing might have no benefit at all. There are many more ingredients in Chronicle SwitchOn which may offer benefit but those are the main ones I look for, and the attractive price makes it a no brainer. Last but not least, it actually tastes good (pineapple for the win), so it’s a pre-workout I will keep coming back to.
