Biotech ZMA Attack


I decided to give Biotech ZMA a try this month. I was keen to try ZMA for a few personal reasons, as I don’t get enough magnesium in my personal diet and, to test the effects on sleep as I am a chronic insomniac.

So, what is ZMA?

Biotech ZMA is Zinc with Magnesium Aspartate and vitamin B6. Vitamin B6 is there to help with absorption and to increase energy levels. However, magnesium and zinc are not so simple, so we will explore these a little more.

Magnesium Aspartate

Magnesium is needed for hundreds of biochemical reactions in the body. Magnesium helps to maintain normal nerve and muscle function, supports a healthy immune system, assists with the regulation of blood glucose levels, and aids in the production of energy and protein.

Magnesium Aspartate has one of the highest absorption rates, if not the highest of all the magnesium forms on the market, as the magnesium is bound to aspartic amino acid. Higher than other versions like Magnesium Oxide or Magnesium Citrate, here, the absorption rate is about 70%.

Magnesium deficiencies are common in our diets with grains being poor sources of magnesium and we just simply do not eat enough nuts and leafy greens, with a deficiency, potentially increasing blood pressure and insulin resistance.

There are some studies showing a marked improvement in aerobic capacity under extreme stress, such as triathlons, as well as increased oxygen to the muscles. This was only one study, so more is needed to observe other effects on athletes and the general populace. As mentioned already, other notable advantages include an increase in sleep quality, reduction in depression, and reducing the effects of PMS.

Zinc

Zinc helps the body’s immune system function properly. It has a role in cell division, cell growth, wound healing, and the breakdown of carbohydrates. Zinc is another of the more common deficiencies in athletes, vegetarians, and those who sweat a lot.

Probably the most popular claim laid at zinc’s door is that it is an aphrodisiac (think oysters, which are high in zinc) and a testosterone booster. Just remember that this only happens if you are deficient in zinc, but not if you’re already at optimum levels. As with magnesium, it may improve insulin sensitivity and have positive effects on your mood.

As our diets are likely to be deficient in these two, it seems logical to supplement with Biotech ZMA, instead of taking the individual minerals in forms that may be subpar in absorption or added to a multi-vitamin or multi-mineral. Biotech ZMA is the ideal way to top-up on these two micronutrients.

Onto a more anecdotal observation, I started taking Biotech ZMA a few days ago. The first night, and the following few nights, I experienced improved sleep and vivid dreams. Upon further investigation, as I researched more about this quite common experience, I couldn’t find any direct studies in this regard, so this is purely personal observation, but it is a major plus for me with insomnia nonetheless. When it comes to general health, recovery, and performance, I cannot emphasise the benefits of quality sleep enough.

I added this as a regular item now in my own supplementation regimen for the reasons listed above. If you suffer from low testosterone levels, add it to your supplementation regimen, as well as those who suffer from insomnia. Furthermore, it will also assist with enhancing your libido, mood, and general well-being.
