What Is Phosphatidyl Serine?

Phosphatidyl Serine (which we’ll refer to as ‘PS’ moving forward), was originally discovered in 1941 and became very popular worldwide after clinical trials conducted in Italy showed it to be very effective in memory enhancement.

PS is a fatty substance, called a phospholipid, which carries messages between, covers and protects the cells in your brain. It is known as a nootropic and whilst it can be naturally produced in the body, this is largely reliant on the foods we eat. Being that the likes of chicken heart, bovine brain and soy lecthin are not popular food choices in the modern diet, PS is something we do not produce much of and so we get it from supplements.

What are the benefits of Phospatidyl Serine?

Phospatidyl Serine is something which carries many possible benefits, some of these include cognitive enhancement, memory enhancement and stress relief.

Cognitive Enhancement

PS can help people enhance their cognition due to the fact that it may have some neuroprotective properties. These neuroprotective properties are most noticeable in the learning process where it has been shown that people who incorporate a PS supplement into their diet may be able to make calculations at an increased rate, as well as improve their accuracy when it comes to getting information right.

Due to these benefits sometimes being most noticeable when people are either tired or preparing to exercise, PS can be particularly beneficial to athletes.

Memory Enhancement

Increasing the amount of acetylcholine in the body has been shown to enhance memory as well as improve the ability to learn and have greater accuracy. One of the roles of PS is to increase the production of acetylcholine in the body, thus making it a valuable nutrient in helping people with memory enhancement.

Stress Relief

Cortisol is known as the ‘stress hormone’ due to it being involved in the body’s response to stress. It has been shown that Phospatidyl Serine can reduce the amount of Cortisol in your body, which has a positive effect on your stress levels. This benefit can apply to physical and mental stress, making it suitable for athletes and non-athletes.

What dose of Phosphatidyl Serine should I be taking?

PS is generally taken in 100mg doses, 3 times a day. 300mg a day seems to be effective when it comes to preventing cognitive decline.

Studies have been conducted in children and adolescents who were seeking attention improvement and it was found that 200mg was a good dose for this effect. For the same effect in non-elderly adults, a dose of 200mg – 400mg per day was found to be optimal.

It is advisable that you follow the usage instructions which accompany any PS supplement you use.
