There has been quite a lot of hype about D-Aspartic Acid for a while now in our industry and we thought it might be a good idea to help shed some light on what this ingredient can do for you.

There are some debate on whether the use of D-Aspartic Acid alone or combined with other ingredients is effective, and today we would like to get down to the bottom of it.

WHAT IS D-ASPARTIC ACID (DAA)?

It’s an amino acid that has an acidic side chain. It’s believed that this ingredient can help boost natural testosterone levels in healthy adults which will then lead to more lean active muscle.


WHAT SCIENCE SAYS:


DAA AND TESTOSTERONE

A study conducted on 23 men who were given a daily dose of 3 grams of DAA for 12 days and another group consisting of 20 men were given a placebo for this period. The study wanted to investigate whether DAA can help increase the production of LH (Luteinizing hormone) and testosterone. The study concluded that DAA did manage to induce an enhancement of testosterone and LH, however, it was not much (1)

Another study done on young bodybuilders showed that there was no real effect on hormone levels or body composition. According to the researchers, DAA did not work at all and they said that: “We conclude that 28 days of DAA supplementation at a daily dose of 3 grams is ineffective in upregulating the activity of the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal axis and has no preferential effects in which to increase skeletal muscle mass and strength in resistance-trained men.” (2) There are not many studies available at the moment to back the fact that DAA can help boost testosterone, not to mention actual lean muscle!


DAA AND BODY COMPOSITION

In the above study the researchers also concluded that there was no change in muscle or strength. It’s kind of disappointing to know that there is so much hype around a product that can’t be backed up by solid science.


WHAT IS DAA GOOD FOR?

If anything I suppose the best use for DAA would be to help improve your fertility. According to a study 2.66 grams of DAA daily for 90 days can help improve fertility by almost 2-fold, now those are impressive stats. (3)


SHOULD YOU INVEST IN DAA

To be honest I think your money will be better spent elsewhere. If you were looking to purchase DAA to help increase lean muscle, I for one would rather opt for a solid pre- or post-workout recovery formula not to mention creatine or protein instead.
